• Disadvantage Animated Short Film / TVC Spoof - Video
  • The Brief
  • The Execution

I decided to create this short in August 2008, partially as a spoof of the 'Advertising Advantage' commercials doing the rounds of late-night TV, and partially as a response to some of our suppliers running 'viral' ads on Youtube and other sites (I felt Max Interactive could benefit from running some 'virals' of its own).

I wanted it to take the form of an animated TVC, following closely the 'Advertising Advantage' original, while subverting the sell-points that the former was trying to make, and positioning Max as a superior alternative. I think it captured this essence pretty well, and this was how I presented it to our MD.

However, for some reason the MD of Max couldn't see the value in running a (free), 'viral' self-advertising campaign, so he rejected the 'offer' of using the short for our marketing purposes. At that point I added various idents and removed the ending voice-over, and loaded an updated version on to my main Youtube account as a simple 'spoof' on the original TVC.

This short was once again made in Moviestorm, with the set and characters being customised accordingly to correspond closely to the actors appearing in the original Advertising Advantage TVC. The dialogue was recorded in Audacity, and also brought into Moviestorm during animation. Output footage was then brought into Premiere Elements for post-production, and additional foley plus environmental sounds added.

The final output was rendered to HD Flash video, and uploaded to Youtube. I've now 'recreated' the original video as pitched to our MD (less idents, and including the 'sales pitch' voice over at the end), and this is the version linked in this portfolio.
